The Fight Against Perfection


Perfection is everywhere in our society… to be the perfect wife….how to be the perfect mom…..get the perfect summer body….plan a perfect birthday party, I could go on and on…

Honestly, it’s exhausting and completely unattainable. I consider myself to be a “recovering perfectionist” and have learned some things through that journey. Perfectionism is really more about seeking acceptance from others rather than striving for self-focused improvements. The amount of pressure we put on ourselves to not mess up, not be criticized, is so great that individuals suffer from depression/anxiety because of it.

What would truly happen if we allowed ourselves to not be perfect? And be okay with not being perfect? I think what comes from that is self-acceptance, self-compassion, self-love-all important things that most of us lack. Every single one of us struggles with something, some more than others, so why not just embrace our struggles. How awesome would it be if we were gentle with ourselves and with others WHEN (not if) failure occurs, what if we recognized that we are all human-with emotions, down-falls, strengths, weaknesses? Instead of getting into the cycle of beating ourselves up and then feeling bad about it then beating ourselves up about beating ourselves up (see the nasty cycle here?) we acknowledge our mistake/failure and move the heck on! When did we become such a sensitive society where we can only accept things when they are perfect?

Striving for perfection is the worst enemy of getting things done. Instead of saying “that mile I just ran wasn’t fast enough” you say at least I ran a mile today, instead of “I didn’t make my son’s birthday cake from scratch” you say it was a wonderful birthday and everyone enjoyed the cake that was served. Making effort-any effort-is better than nothing at all, the effort doesn’t need to be perfect in order to be made. Let us freely give grace to ourselves, and others who are just trying to do their best at life and acknowledge that perfection is a waste of our precious time.

Fun Facts Friday!

Hi everyone! It’s been an awesome week around here and we have a pretty great weekend in store as well.

Charlotte had her Valentine’s Day party at school yesterday and it was probably the cutest thing ever. Though I was thankful she only had 16 kiddos in her class because putting together those little valentine’s were time consuming!

This week’s weather has been gorgeous so we decided to take full advantage yesterday. After her party we hit up chick-fil-a and had a picnic at the park. Though the ground still had snow the air and sun was nice and warm!


So I found a fun survey I thought I’d do for this Fun Friday 😉

Three Places I want to visit

  • Alaska-Because I love the outdoors, snow, animals (whales, bears, etc). This is the place where you can get all things at once.
Northern Lights
  • The Northern Lights-This has been on my bucket list for a long time. This seriously seems like something you would see in space. I want to do this ASAP!
  • Italy-I want to take a few weeks and travel all over Italy. The food, the scenery, the culture, yes please!

Three Things I eat Daily

  • Coffee-I know this isn’t an ‘eat’ but I cannot live without my coffee. It is a must have!
  • Eggs! So many ways to have them, plus we enjoy breakfast for dinner around here.
  • Shakeology-I love my shake-o shakes and the energy they give me to chase around my crazy 2 year old!

Three Talents I Wish I Had

  • Singing-I’ve always wanted to be able to sing. But trust me when I say I was not blessed with that talent.
  • Drawing-I would love to be able to draw or paint something beautiful. I’ve also never really been creative but I’m working on it!
  • Interior Decorating-Joanna Gaines anyone?!

Three Celebrities I Would Want to be Friends With

  • Ellen-I truly just love that woman.
  • Jillian Michaels- I’ve posted about my love for her before. She’s funny but would also kick my butt!
  • Joanna Gaines-I love her farm, her personality (plus Chip and my husband have the same goofball humor), and I need her to come decorate my house.

Three Instagram Accounts I Love

  • Skinny Meg-She is TRULY inspiring. I’ve loved watching her journey over the past year and a half or so.
  • Robin Arzon-There’s something about a badass tattooed chick athlete that draws me in. Plus her abs are amazeballs.
  • Brittany Dixon-Her food pictures, her adorable kiddos, what else can I say. I just think we would be best friends if we met in real life 😉

Three Favorite Shows

  • Scandal!!! I need to watch the latest one, so no spoilers, okay?! I go to bed too early (snore, zzzz!)
  • The Office-I’m pretty sure my husband and I have watched every single episode of every single season a dozen times. We still think it’s just as funny.
  • Friends-“I’ll be there for you….when your rain starts to pour” oh, sorry-I forgot I can’t sing 😉

10 Things I’m Currently Crushing On

How’s the day going for everyone so far? Over here, things are good! The munchkin had preschool this morning and boy she was stylin’

I swear she’s going to be 16 before I know it.

I took a strength class while she was in school and holy burn! It was a pyramid style whole body strength class, I’ll be feeling it tomorrow that’s for sure. Now she’s taking a nap and I’m here chatting with you lovely people 🙂

The 10 Things I’m Currently Crushing On

  1. I am in love with the Method brand laundry detergent. Specifically the he smell is amazing! Plus the ingredients are things I can pronounce and can feel safe washing my families clothes in! I think I just really like Method in general, all my cleaning supplies are Method brand.
  2. Chobani Flip-Coffee-As I’ve mentioned, I LOVE my coffee. This yogurt is the perfect sweet treat without being a calorie or sugar bomb.
  3. Fitbit-Charge-I truly love my Fitbit Charge. I’m a big numbers person when it comes to my nutrition and exercise so having a real-time calorie burn and step counter is huge for me. I love being able to see exactly how many calories I burned during a workout.
  4. Just Jillian-I have always been obsessed with Jillian Michaels. I loved her on the Biggest Loser, listened to her podcast religiously, bought ALL her workout DVDs, have her books (wow, I totally sound like a creeper) and now I’m of course in love with her new reality show. If you haven’t seen it, I think you’d get a kick out of it.
  5. The Story Of Marriage-My husband and I are reading through this devotional and love it. If you’re married, I would highly recommend this book.
  6. Garden Variety-I recently painted my nail with this Essie’s shade and really enjoy it. I’ve gotten many compliments, and looking at it honestly just makes me happy!
  7. Game of Thrones-My parents are actually the ones to get us turned onto this show. I honestly thought they were weird for liking this show. Then I started watching it and I now totally get it. We have Apple TV and have been blowing through the seasons like no one’s business.
  8. Strength Training-Something about lifting heavy weights is so empowering. I love feeling strong and sore.
  9. Spring time! I know it’s still February but I’m totally crushing on this warm weather we are having this week. I’m dreaming of spring and getting our yard (and garden) put together. We recently built a house so we have nothing in our front or back yard, yikes!
  10. Easter Salt and Pepper Shakers-I cannot handle the cuteness of these salt and pepper shakers. Since having Charlotte I like to decorate for every holiday and these will be on our table for Easter this year.
